Instructions

In this unit on the Solar System, students should be able to identify the following vocabulary words and know their definitions.

1. solar system		the sun and the objects that orbit around it
2. orbit		the movement of an object around another planet
3. planet		a large body of rock or gas that orbits the sun
4. asteroid		a chunk of rock or metal that orbits the sun
5. comet		a large ball of ice and dust that orbits the earth.
6. rotation		the spinning of an object on its axis
7. axis		an imaginary line that goes through the North Pole and the South Pole
8. revolution		the path an object takes as it moves around another object in space.
9. phases		the different shapes the moon seems to have in the sky
10. lunar eclipse		when the earth's shadow falls on the moon
11. solar eclipse		the moon's shadow falls on Earth
12. star		a hot ball of glowing gases
13. constellation		a group of stars that forms a pattern
14.telescope		a tool that is used to make things that are far away look closer
15. crescent		a phase of the moon when less than 1/2 half is visible in the sky
16. gibbeous		a phase of the moon when over 1/2 of the moon is visible in the sky
17. full moon		a phase of the moon when the entire surface of the moon is visible in the sky.
18. new moon		A phase of the moon when no moon is visible in the sky
19. waxing		growing larger
20. waning		growing smaller
