Part 1 - Directions: Students will read the article, “Reasons for Small Business Success” https://smallbusiness.chron.com/reasons-small-business-success-4666.html Links to an external site.. Students will reference the article and come up with their own ideas as to “why small businesses are successful”.
Part 2 - Directions: Students will also read the article, “How Important are Small Businesses to Local Economies” http://smallbusiness.chron.com/important-small-businesses-local-economies-5251.html Links to an external site.
- As a class, discuss the impact that small businesses have on the local economy.
Part 3 - Process: The teacher will provide a “topic” for each group, each of the topics listed will be the basis of a debate. Two students will be for the statement, while the other two will be against the statement. Display the topics for the students to see.
- Universal health care—the federal government should provide cradle-to-grave health care for all citizens
- Import quotas on foreign goods—the federal government should limit the number of foreign goods that can be imported into the United States
- Homeless people—the poor should be given food, clothing, shelter, and jobs
- Child care—businesses should be required to provide child care for the children of all employees
- Competition—businesses can use any techniques that they want in order to compete
- Employee layoffs—businesses must notify employees of closings three months before the business closes
- Sharing of wealth—people who earn high incomes should share them with low-income families
Groups can be identified in two ways:
- Students select the topic in which they are interested.
- The instructor assigns students to groups to balance the ability levels of the groups.
Students should base their stances on their knowledge of the topic and on any materials that can be found via internet research to support those views. Emphasize that all points identified in the debates should relate to the private enterprise system.
