Course Syllabus

Instructor:  Mrs. Suzanne Shields

We will learn skills that will help you to be successful in life. I encourage you to be proactive in regards to your education by ensuring that you prepare for class each day and complete all work assigned to your best ability! If you are unsure about an assignment or have questions, speak with me at an appropriate time. Class (School) Rules:  Be Prompt. Be Polite. Be Prepared. Be Patient. Be Productive. Be Positive.

Class Supplies/Materials: Loose-leaf notebook paper, pens, pencils, and highlighters

Class Procedures: Students are to enter the classroom quietly and begin working on the bell ringer assignment. Students are NOT permitted to use wireless communications during school hours (i.e. cell phone, MP3 Players, IPods, pagers, etc.) This is a school-wide rule.  Complete all assignments and follow teacher instructions at all times. Be courteous to everyone in the class.

Class Expectations:

  • Be prepared for class. Be in your assigned seat and ready to begin class when the bell rings. Follow all school rules and procedures. Avoid using profane/vulgar language or symbols. Do not participate in disruptive behaviors. Remain in assigned places at all times. No sleeping in class. 
  • Makeup Work – If you have an excused absence, you are allowed three (3) days to complete and turn in any missed work. You are responsible for obtaining any missed work – ask a friend what you missed, email or speak with Mrs. Shields before or after class, and check the Canvas classroom.  
  • No eating in class.
  • Clean up after yourself. You are expected to help clean up even if you are not the one who made the mess.
  • Do not leave the classroom without permission. (Use the restroom BEFORE or AFTER class.)  
  • Attend tutoring sessions. Tutoring sessions are scheduled according to school policy.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures when using kitchen equipment and while in the Foods Lab area.

Students who do not follow classroom and school rules will not be permitted to participate in cooking labs. (Labs are a privilege. Lost privileges will impact your participation grade.)

Consequences for Violating Class Rules and Procedures:

  1. Verbal Warning – Citation
  2. Student Reflection (ISS) and/or Parent Conference
  3. Office Referral

Grading Scale: Assignments 40%, Participation 30%, and Tests 30% of total grade.
