This week our spelling words all follow the DOUBLE CONSONANT pattern. We began looking at this pattern last week.
Take a closer look at your words and think about the different forms that the word could possibly take.
For instance, most of the words can be made plural. But how do we do that? The English language has many rules for adding suffixes to words. Let's take a look at one rule that applies to our words. Links to an external site.
Links to an external site.So, now we know that if a word has a VOWEL before the y, we simply add s to make the word plural.
If a word has a CONSONANT before the Y, we must change the Y to an I, and then add es.
Practice this by writing the plural form of your BASIC spelling words on the back of your spelling flash cards. (Some words cannot be made plural)
