Focus Area: Data & Assessment

Teachers will use technology to make data more accessible, adjust instruction to better meet the needs of a diverse learner population, and reflect upon their practice through the consistent, effective use of assessment.

The table below identifies each of the competencies in the Data & Assessment Focus Area. As you read each competency, consider what this practice may look like in action. The Examples in the right column may help prompt your thinking.

Competency Examples
Integrate digitally enhanced formative and summative assessments as a part of the teaching and learning process. Teachers utilize online assessments to aggregate and analyze student performance data, providing feedback to the teacher for the day's lesson regarding strengths and weaknesses of the students for that topic.
Use performance data and digital tools to empower student meta-cognition for self-assessment & self-monitoring their own learning progress. Students use feedback and other pertinent performance data from the teacher following an assessment to self-identify the areas where additional study is needed and create a personal plan of action.
Utilize multiple and varied forms of assessment including examples of student work products. Students create a digital portfolio that is continually evaluated against a standards-aligned rubric of matrix and solicit feedback from a larger community of learners.

Utilize technology and digital tools to synthesize and apply qualitative and quantitative data to:

  • Create individual learner profiles of strengths, weaknesses, interests, skills, gaps, preferences.
  • Inform, personalize, and calibrate individual learning experiences.
  • Identify specific plans of action related to weaknesses, gaps, and needed skills as identified in the learner profile.
  • Reflect and improve upon instructional practice.
Students and teachers work together to create a profile that informs instructional design and facilitates differentiation of instruction. The teacher then provides online resource materials specific to the needs of each student based on their learner profile.
