Creating a color wheel with watercolors.
Draw a circle between 6 and 7 inches in diameter. You can use many things to make the circle. I used a bowl turned over.
- Divide the circle into 3 sections. A color wheel is based on thirds. If you divide it into fourths you will have trouble. These will be the primary colors, red, blue and yellow.
- Divide these sections in half, now you have 6 sections. These will be the secondary colors, orange, green, and purple.
- Divide these in half again. They will make the intermediate colors; red-purple, blue purple, blue-green, yellow-green, yellow-orange and red-orange.
- You will have a total of 12 pie sections. Label each section the color it should be. If you do not you will make a mistake.
Paint the primary and secondary colors. This will leave a space between the colors where the intermediate will be painted.
Wait for the paint to dry. If you touch wet paint to wet paint it will bleed into each.
After the paint dries you can paint the intermediate colors.
Craftsmanship is important, keeping the colors from running into each other and staying in the lines is part of the lesson.
