Social Filter (week 2) Things I Can Say Aloud/Thoughts to Keep in My Head

Information for Parents and Teachers Regarding This Week’s Social Skills Session

Session Date:

Lesson Theme: Things I Can Say Aloud/Thoughts to Keep in My Head

Information Regarding This Week’s Lesson:

This week we will discuss how some thoughts should be kept in our head and not expressed out loud. The “Things I Can Say Aloud” comments involve using good manners. The “Thoughts to Keep in My Head” comments are things we should only think about. They are thoughts we should keep in our head and never say aloud because those comments might hurt someone’s feelings and they make us sound rude.

We used a drawing of a person’s head that contained a slot in the forehead and a slot in the mouth. Thoughts we should keep in our head went into the top of the head (keep thoughts in head) and the things that are acceptable to say aloud went through the slot in the mouth (okay for others to hear them).

Learning when to express our thoughts and learning when to keep our thoughts to ourselves is a very important social skill. A copy of the head and the thoughts are included with this packet so you can cut them apart and practice the skill again with your student. Please discuss the reasoning behind each statement so your child better understands the difference between the things that could be said aloud and things that need to be kept in their head and not spoken aloud.
